American Staffordshire Terrier

AmStaff2The American Staffordshire Terrier – American Staffy for short – is a cute and sturdy dog.  He’s loved for his loyalty, agility, and good nature.

This dog was probably bred with a Bulldog and terrier to create the American Staffy.  There is some controversy over this, however, but, in any case, we still have this fun and loving terrier.

According to the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America, the American Staffy stands about 17-19 inches at the shoulders.  They weight 40-60 pounds, approximately.

The American Staffordshire Terrier needs little grooming other than an occasional brushing.  Also, another good thing about this breed is that they don’t shed as much as others.  Make sure you have your dog’s nails cut regularly by your groomer, vet, or, if you have the knowledge and experience, yourself.American_Staffordshire_Terrier

The American Staffy needs daily exercise.  He’s smart and likes to move, so he’ll need some tiring exercises for his body and brain to keep him out of trouble.

These terriers can be very athletic, excelling in dog agility, flyball, police work, tracking, and many other sports and activities.  The American Staffy is very intelligent and loves learning, which shouldn’t go to waste.

The American Staffordshire Terrier HAS TO BE trained if you want a good, obedient dog.  Basic commands such as sit, lay down, heel, and stay will keep your dog safe and under control.  It’s your duty to make your dog behaves well in public and does not bark or jump on anyone.

dog smilingOften, the American Staffy is classified as a “pit bull.”  Why?  The reason is that these dogs were originally bred for fighting.  People would make bets, put two dogs in a pit, and let them fight.  It was terribly cruel and is now against the law in most countries.  Unfortunately, people have bred and raised these dogs irresponsibly and let them be aggressive.  You will often hear the media report a sometimes fatal attack from a pit bull.  This is why it is so very important to find a reputable breeder who breeds only for the best temperament and intelligence.  This breeder will be greatly concerned about where his/her puppies go home to and be very involved with puppy buyers, requiring them to fill out a puppy application and maybe even looking at their house to see if it can best accommodate an American Staffy.  This is the breeder you want to look for!  Now, proper raising of this terrier is also vital.  NEVER encourage aggression in your dog, even when he’s a puppy.  Correct biting and nipping and, if your dog ever shows even the slightest sign of aggression (behaviors such as low growls, angry barks, humping, etc.), consult a professional trainer immediately.  Yes, people can be very frightened of pit bulls, but there is a good reason.  American Staffy owners have not been responsible and have let their dog challenge their authority or, even worse, encouraged aggression.  Perhaps they thought this would mold him into the perfect guard dog, snarling and snapping at any unknown person.  It didn’t; the dog bit an innocent person.  By buying from a reputable breeder and raising your American Staffy right, you will be an advocate for this breed, showing that it can be a good pet.  Please be a responsible pet owner!  Take your terrier to dog training classes starting at puppyhood, make sure he knows his place in the pack, and supervise him with children to prevent any bites.

The American Staffordshire Terrier comes in practically any solid or combination of colors you can imagine!  Some examples are black and white, brown and black, and red and white.

The American Staffy loves to learn, which makes him an excellent dog for learning tricks or competing in sports.  Also, by training him, you will be developing a strong trust between you and your American Staffy.  Your dog will see that you are the kind pack leader who issues the commands and gives out fun rewards.  Therefore, your American Staffy will be more willing to obey you in an urgent situation.  Some basic tricks can be a life saver for your dog!  Please read the Tricks Page to help start you and your dog on this exciting journey.
