2014_Westminster_Kennel_Club_Dog_Show_(12482178465)The Beagle – which is the 5th most popular dog according to the American Kennel Club – is known for its jolly attitude and fun-loving nature.  He’s very adaptable and can be a great hunting companion as well as a pet.

570px-Beagle_puppy_portraitUnfortunately, no one really knows where this cute dog originated from.  However, people loved him because he was an excellent hunter with a tireless will to track down game.  The Beagle’s nose is still as amazing as it was then, and you will often see this dog with his nose on the ground or eagerly sniffing the air.

The average height of the Beagle is about 13-16 inches.  He weighs approximately 22-25 pounds.  The Beagle’s size makes him a nice traveling companion.

Here’s a word of warning: this dog does shed!  Brush him regularly to keep it at a minimum.  Other than that, however, the Beagle’s coat is easy to take care of.  Make sure you have your dog’s nails cut regularly by your groomer, vet, or, if you have the knowledge and experience, yourself.

When the Beagle was a hunting dog, he had to have a lot of durability and energy to track down game.  Therefore, this dog needs a lot of exercise.  Don’t let his small size fool you; he is really a very active dog.  Beagles love to take long walks so they can pick up all of the different scents, and they also enjoys competing in sports such as tracking or dog agility.  If you choose to neglect exercising your Beagle, he will be bored (which leads to behavior problems such as barking, digging, and chewing) and start to get overweight.Agility_-_Sprung_Beagle_2 (1)

Beagles excel in dog sports such as tracking, conformation, dog agility, obedience, rally, and, of course, hunting.  They also make great therapy dogs because of their happy and friendly attitude.

The Beagle is an intelligent dog, and this shouldn’t go to waste.  By training your dog, the two of you will build an amazing bond of love and trust.  Your dog will be more willing to follow your commands and will take you seriously because you issue the commands and dole out wonderful rewards.  Check out the Tricks Page to get you and your Beagle started on this exciting adventure!

666px-Beagle_001Remember the fact that the Beagle has a wonderful sense of smell?  This can be a good and a bad thing.  It can be great fun to have a dog who can hunt with you, but it can be dangerous for a pet.  If your Beagle sees a rabbit on the other side of the fence, he will try his hardest to get out and chase it.  He will look for holes in the fence, try to dig under it, and try to jump it if it’s short.  This makes perfecting the Come or recall command vital for your Beagle’s safety.  If your dog won’t listen to you if he slips out of his collar, pulls the leash from your hands, or gets out of the fence, you are going to loose your beloved companion.

The average lifespan of the Beagle is 12-15 years.  By feeding your dog healthy, balanced meals and exercising him regularly you will help him live the longest he can.

The most common and popular color for the Beagle is white/tan/black.  However, they do come in other combinations such as black/red/white, lemon/white, brown/white, and many others.

The Beagle is loved for its goofy attitude, adaptability, and athleticism.  Many families have chosen him as their family dog, as he loves children.  The Beagle has charmed many people with his cute little face, wiggling nose, and licorice eyes.
